PITTSBURGH -- It was heard loud and clear over the public address system inside the fieldhouse.
"We are here to announce the winner..."
The morning of Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2020 seemed pretty normal at Hempfield Area High School in Greensburg.
But across campus, inside the fieldhouse, a surprise presentation was in the works for one senior student-athlete.
Just past 9:41 a.m. with over 400 members of the senior class gathered in the bleachers for an assembly, one individual was called to center court.
"This person, is..."
Each week during the 2019 high school football season, Chaffin Luhana Scholar Athletes of the Week were nominated and featured during the Friday Night Rivals live broadcasts on 22 The Point.
From an impressive group of many talented student-athletes, an overall winner of the Chaffin Luhana Scholar Athlete of the Year contest was selected, earning a $5,000 college scholarship.
In front of her classmates, teachers, administrators and parents, Olivia Persin was named the Chaffin Luhana Scholar Athlete of the Year, presented by Eric Chaffin, Founder and Managing Partner of the Chaffin Luhana Law Firm.
"For us as a law firm, our values that we look for in people as well as our team is excellence, hard work and compassion for other people and you certainly emulate all of this," Eric Chaffin said.
Persin carries a 4.0 grade point average, is a Distinguished Honor Roll student, the Vice-President of Student Council and the recipient of the Seton Hill University Women in Science Day Award for Excellence in Mathematics.
"It means a lot to me to have the support of everyone around me in all of my opportunities within my career through sports and academics," Olivia Persin said.
As an athlete, Persin is the starting shortstop on the two-time PIAA state champion Hempfield Area softball team, a three-time WPIAL champion, two-year letterman on the volleyball and basketball teams and the school's 2018 WPIAL Sportsmanship Summit representative.
Her community involvement includes volunteering at the Excela Westmoreland Hospital, American Red Cross, Salvation Army and Westmoreland County Food Bank.
"I'm proud that she's been able to do all of it and not just one part of it," her father, Mark Persin said.
"I think her being able to do all of those things make her a complete individual and will help guide her in the future and will continue to allow her to be successful."
During the presentation Persin announced she has committed to Seton Hill University in Greensburg and plans to study mathematics, chemistry and computer science.
"This is just wonderful," her mother, Kim Persin said.
"It brings all of her hard work and everything she has strived for to a head. It shows her that it is worth the while, good things come from hard work."
Pittsburgh's FOX 53 and 22 The Point would like to thank Chaffin Luhana for their support of Friday Night Rivals and high school sports in western Pennsylvania, along with the Hempfield Area administrators and staff for organizing the presentation.
Congratulations to Olivia Persin, the Chaffin Luhana Scholar Athlete of the Year.
