April Neubauer had a seizure while giving birth to her daughter Rosalia at the Door County Medical Center in Sturgeon Bay, Wisc. She had to undergo an emergency C-section as a result.
April wanted her baby to be breastfed, but her seizure complicated things.
That's when nurse Cybil Martin-Denneh called on Rosalia's dad, Maxamillian Neubauer, to step in.
Martin-Denneh had used a supplemental feeding system she created – using a fake nipple shield, a feeding tube, a syringe and formula – before. But only with moms who were having trouble nursing. Never with dads.
"I have tried multiple times," she said. "Usually I get a look of disbelief, why would I even ask something so crazy?"
But Max "was 100 percent," she said. "He's like, heck yes, let's do this."
The photo proof of his fatherly act has since gone viral.
"I really hope in encourages other nurses that, you know, sometimes you can think outside of the box," Martin-Denneh said.
