PITTSBURGH -- Pine-Richland's quest to win a third straight WPIAL Class 6A championship is off to a great start, following a 42-14 victory over Hempfield Area in Friday's Week 1 AHN Friday Night Rivals powered by IGS Energy matchup broadcast live on 22 the Point.

Now in his second season under center, junior quarterback Cole Spencer connected on five touchdown passes, targeting Luke Miller for three scores alone in the first half.

"I love the way we battled," Pine-Richland head coach Eric Kasperowicz said during the postgame trophy presentation.

"It was a slow start, but we put together a really good second quarter. We made some mistakes but corrected them and put it on them there in the second quarter."

The home Spartans - powered this season by a roster that includes 24 seniors including one of the strongest offensive and defensive line units in Class 6A - hung tough early, tying the game at 7-7 with a Blake Remaley 21-yard touchdown strike to receiver Nathan Roby in the first quarter.

But the Rams found another gear in the first half, rattling off four straight touchdowns before halftime to build a 35-7 lead at the break.

In total, Spencer threw touchdown passes to Miller, D'Avay Johnson and Eli Jochem. Luke Meckler also added a rushing touchdown in the third quarter.

Pine-Richland improves to 2-0, 1-0, bolstering its resume with a strong conference road win after beating defending Class 5A state champion Penn Hills 21-0 in Week 0.

Hempfield Area defeated local rival Greensburg Salem 40-3 in Week 0, but now drops to 1-1, 0-1 following Friday's loss.
